The challenge
What was going wrong
A caller claiming to be from a well-known technology company persuaded her that her computer was infected and talked her through installing remote access software. She provided card details before becoming suspicious and hanging up. She telephoned us in some distress roughly ninety minutes later.
The solution
What we built
We saw her the same afternoon, removed the remote access tools and a keylogger, secured every account that had been reachable, enabled two-factor authentication throughout, and produced a written incident report that went to her bank that evening.
How we approached it
Stage 1
Same-day emergency appointment within two hours of the call
Stage 2
Disconnected the machine from the network before anything else
Stage 3
Removed two remote access tools and one keylogger
Stage 4
Established exactly which accounts had been accessible during the session
Stage 5
Reset passwords on all affected accounts from a known-clean device
Stage 6
Enabled two-factor authentication on email, banking and shopping accounts
Stage 7
Produced a written incident report suitable for a bank fraud claim
Stage 8
Installed Scam Guard and completed a follow-up review after 30 days
Outcome
Remote access removed before any transfer completed
The pending transaction was stopped by her bank using our written report
No money was ultimately lost
Every account secured with two-factor authentication

“I felt so foolish and I very nearly did not ring anybody. Not one person there made me feel stupid. They simply dealt with it, and the report they wrote is what convinced my bank to stop the payment.”
