The challenge

What was going wrong

Screen time was a nightly argument. The existing controls applied the same rules to a seven-year-old and a fifteen-year-old, and the eldest had already found that switching to mobile data bypassed them entirely. The parents felt they were policing rather than parenting.

The solution

What we built

We set genuinely different rules per child, applied filtering at the router as well as on each device so mobile data was covered, and — importantly — agreed the rules with the children present rather than imposing them secretly.

How we approached it

Stage 1
A conversation with the parents about what they actually wanted to achieve
Stage 2
Separate age-appropriate profiles for each of the three children
Stage 3
Filtering at router level as well as per device
Stage 4
Homework mode that permits research and blocks games and video
Stage 5
A family meeting where the rules were explained openly to the children
Stage 6
Purchase approval enabled on all three accounts
Stage 7
Weekly parent summary and bypass attempt alerts
Stage 8
A quarterly review as the children grow

Outcome

  • Three genuinely different rule sets rather than one blunt policy
  • Mobile data bypass closed
  • Two bypass attempts detected and discussed calmly
  • The parents report the nightly arguments have largely stopped
“What made the difference was that they insisted on telling the children what was being limited and why. It stopped being something we were doing behind their backs.”
