Phone battery advice is full of guidance that was true for nickel batteries two decades ago and is false for the lithium cells in every modern phone. Worse, some of it actively shortens battery life.
Myths worth discarding
- "Let it drain to zero." Wrong, and harmful. Deep discharges stress lithium cells. Topping up frequently is better than running flat.
- "Do not use it while charging." Harmless on any modern phone.
- "Close all your apps." Counterproductive. Reopening an app from cold uses more power than leaving it suspended.
- "Only use the original charger." Any reputable certified charger is fine. Uncertified cheap chargers are genuinely risky, but that is a safety point, not a battery-life one.
What genuinely helps
- Keep it cool. Heat is the primary killer of battery capacity. Never leave a phone on a car dashboard in summer.
- Stay between roughly 20 and 80 percent where convenient. Enable optimised or adaptive charging so it does not sit at 100 percent all night.
- Reduce screen brightness. The display is by far the largest consumer of power.
- Audit location permissions. Apps tracking location constantly in the background are the most common cause of mysterious drain.
- Use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data where available. Meaningfully less power for the same work.
When it is time for a replacement battery
Batteries are consumable parts. After roughly two years and 500 full charge cycles, most retain around 80 percent of their original capacity, which is exactly why a phone that once lasted all day now dies by mid-afternoon.
A replacement battery costs a fraction of a new phone and typically restores full-day life for another two to three years. If your phone is otherwise fine, it is the cheapest worthwhile upgrade available — and far better for the environment than replacing a working device.
